Tamarind Cordial
Von Humboldt’s Natur Wasser is the result of a collaboration with author Andrea Wulf, inspired by her book The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World. Reading the story of the adventurer and naturalist, we found that Humboldt had concocted a folk recipe during his travels: using the pod-like fruit of the tamarind, he turned unsavory water into a refreshing “lemonade.” The delicious fruit was infused along with lemon zest and golden brown sugar, creating a unique cordial that is equal parts sweet, tangy and nutty.
Turmeric Cordial
Von Humboldt’s Turmeric Liqueur is the second in Tamworth’s series of spirits inspired by 19th century explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Turmeric on its own is quite a powerful, bitter flavor, so our distillers combine it with the floral piquant of coriander seed and rose petal to smooth things out, then lemon zest to bring them together, underscoring the bitterness and opening up the spice on the nose. The final result is worthy of any discerning globetrotter’s amaro line-up: an earthy modifier that is able to stand up in a cocktail as a base, serve as an intriguing addition to a drink, or be sipped on its own as a digestif.

Despite being the most famous scientist of his age, Alexander von Humboldt has faded into obscurity. Considered the “forgotten father of environmentalism,” von Humboldt revolutionized the way Western scientists thought of nature. His radical vision of nature as a complex and interconnected global force – ‘the web of life’ – totally changed our understanding of our relationship with the natural world. So thorough was his paradigm shift that we take it for granted, rather than crediting Humboldt for his “invention”.
